[My Leap Year is a 12-month life project (begun 11/01/07) at the end of which I intend to be writing full-time. 365 small steps = 1 giant leap.]
I will do my best to keep blogging this week, but the posts may not have their normal length or depth as a few situations have arisen that will be taking some of my time and attention (i.e. buying a new car as my current one enters its final weeks or days of life). Of course, dealing with practical problems as they arise is a natural part of small-stepping, whether those problems are writing-related or not. This whole thing is, after all, a life project.
I am, however, still making and will continue to make writing progress. My superheroine concept for the Image Shadowline contest came to me this morning (a doozy if I do say so myself), and tomorrow should be my first day working out of a notebook office, so that should be interesting. I probably won’t blog about the experience until I have a bit of time to settle into it and see if it’s as viable an idea as it seems right now in my head. But success or failure, the whole process will get reported on at some point in the near future.

I’ve been having a lot of fun myself coming up with decent ideas for this contest. I’m not particularly interested in superhero comics anymore, I’ve recently developed event-fatigue, and have issues with the notion of superheroes in general, but I can’t pass up a fantastic opportunity like that because I think Superman is an outdated character.
The big issue I’ve been having in my own brainstorming is concerning what a superhero[ine] actually is. That’s been tough as nails!
Event fatigue may be a general symptom of the poor use of the genre, but being used badly doesn’t invalidate the genre itself.
This is your chance to take a crack at defining what a superhero[ine] actually is for the coming century!
I hope I’ll be seeing your entry up there with the finalists, and be sure to check out Elton’s column today.
Caleb, if I have to lose in this contest, I hope it’s to you. Or Drew. Or you and Drew. Or you, Drew, and Elizabeth Genco.
But what I really hope is we can all at least make the top 10!
Elton…I’ll see you there!
